The same evening, Maria went to call on her friend Sonia. They had known each other all their lives and had shared music lessons at Mariaâs house. Now, Sonia was respectable and married. With a gentle, patient demeanour and a nicely rounded figure, she had caught the attention of an ambitious young clerk called Roberto Bolero, and they now had a six-month-old baby boy. Maria had to sit and admire the baby for a good half-hour â how very strong he was, how well he was sitting up, how he was taking to solid food â before she could get around to asking her question.
âSonia?â she started, tentatively. âYou know how fond I am of my father.â
âYes, and how you run rings around him! You are always making him do what you want.â
Maria laughed. It was good for him, kept him on his toes.
âWell, this time thereâs something I want to do for him. You know that your Roberto works for Dr Marsat, the lawyer?â
âYe-esâ¦â
âAnd you know Marsat is involved with the Anti-Reform Party?â
âYe-esâ¦â
âI need to find out when they are next meeting. I am convinced it will be at Marsatâs offices. Could you find out from Roberto if that is the case, and let me know when itâs happening? Iâd like to know who they all are and what they are plotting. Itâs important â it will help my father so much to know. For a story in the paper. Do you think you could do that for me?â
âI donât know, Maria. Roberto needs to be careful. What if Marsat found out heâd passed on information? He could lose his position there!â
âOh, it wouldnât come to that. No one will know.â
âBut they might! What are you planning, anyway? Youâve got that look in your eyes; youâre up to something.â
âNothing! I just need to know when the meeting is. You donât have to worry about anything. It will be fine. Please, Sonia?â
Eventually, and reluctantly, Sonia agreed to send her a message, but only if Roberto agreed. Maria felt a familiar pang of guilt. She had always been able to persuade her friend to do anything she asked. Sweet Sonia, who was so willing to help, and who never questioned her motives.
